Antibiotics in the Food Supply

The Centers for Disease Control in the US Came out this year and confirmed that the proliferation of antibiotics in our food supply is creating dangerous bacteria. Those bacteria are outliving the drugs used to treat them.

Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections.”

“In addition, almost 250,000 people who are hospitalized or require hospitalization get Clostridium difficile each year, an infection usually related to antibiotic use. C. difficile causes deadly diarrhea and kills at least 14,000 people each year.”


The effect that the overuse of antibiotics has on our health is reflected in the gut bacteria resident in each of us. In fact, it’s estimated that the human gut contains 100 trillion bacteria, or 10 times as many bacteria as cells in the human body. These antibiotics and the Bt toxins from genetically modified corn, affect the resident gut flora causing health problems. Bt is used to attack the digestive system of insects and is part of the controversy surrounding genetically modified foods, as over half of the corn in the US contains Bt toxin.

As pointed out before on this site, treatment to replace the gut bacteria in patients with C. difficile has been found to be quite effective although unappetizing.

You can reduce the impact of the antibiotics and Bt toxic affects by buying organic products and supporting the labeling of products that are genetically modified in the stores.

Antibiotics Are Losing Their Effectiveness

The CDC officially acknowledged that antibiotics will soon become ineffective.

Centers for Disease Control warned that America is threatened by a wave of new antibiotic-proof germs that could threaten public health”


The cause of this problem is due to the over-use of prescribed antibiotics as well as the over-use of antibiotics in industrial agriculture.

There is and has been a concept known as Wait-And-See Prescriptions (WASP) for some time. The specific reason WASP has been used in countries like Sweden, is to reduce the likelihood of antibiotics losing their potency or effectiveness.

Perhaps it is time to initiate a WASP/ Wait-And-See Prescription program in the US.

US Food Additives

When it comes to food additives you have to give credit where credit is due. In the US, industry has determined that intervention into natural processes will lead to lower costs, more consumption, and ultimately higher profits.

MSN’s Healthy Living segment listed what they think are the top 10 things the US diet includes that are banned in some other countries. Not listed in order are:

  1. Arsenic
  2. BHA and BHT
  3. Brominated vegetable oil
  4. Colors and dyes
  5. Olestra
  6. Potassium bromate
  7. Ractopamine (Banned in Europe, Japan, China, Russia and Taiwan)
  8. rBGH and rBST (bovine growth hormone, genetically engineered from Monsanto)
  9. Hawaiian papaya (now genetically engineered)
  10. Canthaxanthin (Farm-raised salmon coloring… soon to be genetically engineered)

In each instance, the risks may be acknowledged by the American Cancer Society, FDA, The Center for Science in the Public Interest, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or the food industry, but whatever the risks may be, they are deemed acceptable for the American diet.

The Huffington Post’s Big Ag’s Gifts for 2012 brings to bear another additive of concern, antibiotics. The fact that over 70% of all the antibiotics in the US are pumped into animals for human consumption should in itself be a concern. Add to that the increasing lack of effectiveness in antibiotics due to their overuse and you’ve got a real problem.

If you want to make a difference in your own health, and improve the health of the planet, choose to not consume animal and dairy products.
